Volkswagen Golf TDI: With manual transmission, the Golf TDI averaged 41.5 mpg. Mercedes-Benz E-320 CDI (diesel): Test E320 CDIs averaged 33.7 mpg in mostly highway driving, 27 to 29.2 with more city driving. Hybrid cars and SUVs tend to cost more than similar gasoline-powered vehicles.
