What is the Kinesiology Pre-Major? Kinesiology is an integrative discipline that focuses on the various components and processes of human movement related to physical activity and sport. Kinesiology also includes professional fields such as Clinical Exercise Physiology, Physical Education and Coaching, Athletic Training and Sport Administration. You’ll take courses in topics including human anatomy and physiology, exercise and training, the psychology of activity, and more. A coaching authorization is available to those who do not hold an Iowa teaching license. 6. Students completing this program will apply the basic scientific theories and principles that serve as a foundation for the allied health and medical professions. This major provides a foundation for continued studies in graduate school, allied health, physical therapy, or medicine. Examples include, but are not limited to, athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician’s assistant, podiatry, dentistry, and medicine. The bachelor’s degrees in kinesiology offered at the CSU span a wide range of options such as exercise and human performance, motor learning, biomechanics, sports, dance, physical education — pre physical therapy, physical education — teaching and health and wellness. The mission of the kinesiology curriculum is to provide lecture courses based on the science of kinesiology and offer a variety of lifetime fitness activities in proven concepts of wellness and fitness. In the undergraduate program, the Department of Kinesiology has three Bachelor of Arts emphases and two Bachelor Turf Toe KT Tape of Science emphases.

Community college courses toward an AS-T in Kinesiology may include aquatics, combatives, team sports, individual sports, fitness and dance, as well as other relevant science courses. Both the authorization and endorsement qualify an individual to serve as a head coach, assistant, or volunteer coach in any sport offered in Iowa public schools. This concentration provides students with managerial, psychosocial, socio-cultural, and developmental knowledge about sport participation to allow them to understand and to provide leadership related to key issues in sport while analyzing and engaging in the business and culture of sport. The Kinesiology major prepares students for careers in sports medicine, preventive and rehabilitative exercise and fitness. A bachelor’s in kinesiology, sports studies, and physical education requires eight semesters of course work, including a framework of general education requirements and 62 academic hours of major course requirements. Once you complete your bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, you have just one year left of courses to earn your master’s degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology. Because you enroll in a single course each block, entire courses can visit facilities and professionals at work in the field. A maximum of two DCE courses may be substituted for Activity courses provided the DCE courses are officially listed by the University as STU courses (identified as Studio Schedule Type on the Course Schedule).

A maximum of two Activity courses may be taken in the same semester. Activity courses which are sequential-e.g., beginner, intermediate, advanced- may not be taken concurrently. To qualify for graduation in the Kinesiology major, all majors must achieve a minimum grade of C (2.0) in each required course with a KIN prefix (including activity courses, internships, and other non-core KIN courses) and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.50 in the major. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in pre-requisite courses to apply. The hours required for graduation include prescribed courses for all students as well as requirements determined by the various areas of emphasis selected by the student. Students in this major who do not graduate within seven years or who leave school and later re-enter are held for the current program requirements at the time of crossing from the seventh to the eighth year, or are held to the current program requirements during the year of re-entry. Students must meet all admission requirements for entry into the teacher education pre-professional program by the beginning of the fall semester their junior year. Appeals of any of these requirements must be filed with the appropriate departmental committee within one academic year.
